Education for Ministry (EfM) offers a unique opportunity to deepen your faith, connect Christian tradition with daily life, and grow in your ability to live out your baptismal calling. Through mentor-guided study, theological reflection, and small-group discussion, participants gain a richer understanding of Scripture, theology, and the Church's tradition while discerning how God is at work in their lives. Participation is open to everyone, regardless of church affiliation, and there are no educational prerequisites.
Developed by the School of Theology at the University of the South (Sewanee), EfM is a four-year program centered on theological reflection, small-group discussion, and spiritual formation. Participants meet weekly in groups, either in person or online, for 34 weeks each year. Most groups meet between September and May, though schedules may vary.
Sessions typically last about 90 minutes and include assigned readings and other activities completed independently throughout the week. Participants purchase required materials and textbooks. The current annual fee is $325 plus the cost of books, though fees are subject to change. Registration is renewed each year, with no commitment beyond the current year.
EfM requires a meaningful commitment of time and effort. It is not a drop-in Bible study or Sunday morning class. Regular participation is essential, both for personal growth and because each group depends on the contributions of its members. While conflicts inevitably arise, participants are encouraged to make attendance a weekly priority whenever possible.
For 2025–2026, EfM groups are available at St. Christopher’s and Christ Church in Pensacola and at St. Paul’s in Daphne. Several other congregations are exploring the possibility of hosting groups. Clergy and laypersons interested in learning more may contact me at 251-623-2359 or dmclothier51@gmail.com, speak with an existing EfM group, or visit the Sewanee EfM website at https://theology.sewanee.edu/education-for-ministry/.
As the EfM website reminds us: “During the service of Confirmation, we ask God to ‘Renew in these your servants the covenant you made with them at Baptism. Send them forth in the power of the Spirit to perform the service you set before them.’” EfM offers an opportunity to discover how God is calling each of us to live that covenant more fully.
