Advent Taize in the Nave

The Taizé service is intended to be brief and deeply inspirational. Taizé is a non-denominational form of worship that encourages contemplative thought by alternating brief interludes of music, repetitive prayer, silence and meditation. Taizé originated in a small French village of the same name in 1940. The original goal was to unite all Christian denominations. While that goal has yet to be realized, Taizé has achieved major worldwide popularity because of the spiritual feelings the service evokes.

Simple, powerful phrases are used to aid in meditation. The music is simple. The songs are eight-bar phrases that resemble chants more than complex songs. This simplicity allows participants to focus on the spiritual meaning of the music.…
