REPORT OF THE COMMISSION ON DIOCESAN MISSIONS
The Commission on Diocesan Missions met several times during 2008 to continue to gather
more information about the concerns and celebrations of some of the small congregations in the
Diocese. Several congregations were invited to come to the Commission meetings for very informal
visits. The information gathered helped the Commission plan its annual Small Church Conference.
The Small Church Conference was hosted by St. Matthew’s, Chipley, Florida, on November 8,
2008. The topic for this year’s conference was “Christian Education and You”. Many of the small
congregations have requested help with their Christian Education programs. The needs of the small
congregations are vastly different from the needs of large congregations. The small congregations
quite often have limited funds and people to devote to Christian Education programs. Jenni Boyden
and Dick Hooper from Christ Church in Pensacola were the principle presenters for the conference.
They shared many useful ideas and resources for ways to start a program or improve an existing
program. The conference attendees were filled with Mrs. Boyden’s and Mr. Hooper’s enthusiasm and
left with many ideas which will help to give new life to their Christian Eduction programs. The
Commission would like to thank the presenters and St. Matthew’s congregation for a fantastic day of
fellowship, delicious food, and great ideas.
The Commission held its third annual “First Timers” gathering at the 2008 Diocesan
Convention. It was a huge success with more than sixty “First Timers” in attendance. David
Quittmeyer, President of the Standing Committee, gave an informative talk about the Standing
Committee and its work in the Diocese. The Rev. Albert Kennington gave a wonderful history of the
Diocese and the Convention, as well as an overview of some of the procedures of the work of the
Convention. Bishop Duncan welcomed the “First Timers” and expressed his thanks to them for taking
the time to attend the Convention. Several members of the Commission were also there to answer
questions and generally help the “First Timers” feel more at ease at the Convention. A number of the
“First Timers” expressed their thanks for the chance to become acquainted with the workings of the
Convention.
On December 9, 2008, the Commission held its annual Mission Grant Review meeting. Seven
missions presented requests for grants to be considered by the Commission. After much discussion
on the financial status of the Diocese, the Commission recommended $48,000.00 to the Commission
on Finance to be used by the missions.
On behalf of the Commission, I wish to thank our Bishop, The Rt. Rev. Philip M. Duncan, II;
The Rev. Canon T. Mark Dunnam; Borden Morrow, Standing Committee Liaison; and the staff at the
Diocesan office for all their guidance and assistance this year. I also want to thank the hard working
members of the Commission for all of their hard work.

Respectfully submitted,
Lynn M. Ferren, Chair
