Christ the King, Santa Rosa, leads fund drive for building homes in Haiti

Christ the King challenges other diocesan churches to join the effort

Submitted by Bob Dean, Christ the King, Santa Rosa Beach, FL

Father Frank Cooper and Christ the King Episcopal Church in Santa Rosa Beach led the South Walton County Ministerial Association to sponsoring a community church fundraising drive to fund the building of desperately needed housing in earthquake/flood ravaged Haiti.  The drive, with five participating churches, raised $19,500 in two weeks….enough to build 6.5 houses.

“Our little church in the woods would like to challenge all of the other churches in the Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast to join the effort to build houses in Haiti.  If each large church raised just $3000, the medium size churches raised $2000, and the smaller churches raise $1,000, the Diocese could build 38 new houses in Haiti.  Each new house costs $3000 to build.  When we have completed our fund raising, our Diocese could then challenge the other dioceses!” said Bob Dean. “The Episcopal Churches in the united States could easily sponsor 240 houses.” (10,000 homes are needed in Haiti.)

The Fuller Center for Housing, founded by Millard Fuller who also founded Habitat for Humanity, is coordinating this house building effort.  Land is available so funds for building material is what is needed at this point.

We ask each church to reply with a big YES saying “we will put our words into action” or if it is not feasible for your congregation at this time let us know that, as well.  We will supply each participating church with hand outs and other information about the housing ministry in Haitia.

The Fuller Center is also organizing mission trips to Haiti to actually assist in building the volunteer friendly houses.  Older youth groups and adult church members are welcome to volunteer to lend a hand in the construction in Haiti. If you have members interested in participating on a mission trip, we will get you more detailed information.
