The Rev. Scott Trotter

- From Parish the Thought, the parish newsletter for St. Peter’s, Bon Secour

In the last ten months you have heard me preach some forty sermons.  In some of the m I have spoken indirectly and in others directly about issues of social, economic and political concern.  While I do not believe it is responsible for any preacher to use the pulpit to tell a congregation how they should exercise their civic responsibility, I do believe it is an imperative for preachers to shine the light of the Gospel on social, economic and political issues of stewardship, and justice with the explicit intention of challenging the congregation to make decisions from values proclaimed in the Gospel.

Tuesday, November 4, is Election Day.  Cornel West wrote than in a post Christendom society (which we are) the Church needs to find ways to make its voice heard in the public square.  I believe it is your Baptismal responsibility to use the ballot box as a proclamation that the Kingom of God has come near.

“Proclaim the Gospel in secret and your Father in heaven, who sees in secret, will reward you….” (Matthew 6:1 ff)

Grace to all.
